Round Rock ISD Provides Firearm Locks

February 24, 2026

Community members in the Round Rock ISD area can now receive a free firearm lock simply by sending an email, according to district officials.

The Round Rock Independent School District Police Department began promoting the program in January through the district’s digital newsletter. Residents may request a free firearm lock by emailing mailto:police@roundrockisd.orgpolice@roundrockisd.org or by visiting any district high school during regular working hours and asking to speak with a school resource officer.

The initiative stems from a proposal shared last April by RRISD Police Chief Ryan Urrutia, who sought grant funding to purchase between 12,000 and 15,000 firearm safety devices, including cable locks and trigger locks. The goal of the program is to help families securely store firearms and reduce the risk of accidental injury.

In late 2025, the district was awarded a federal grant to fund the purchase and distribution of the locks. Officials also launched a https://www.roundrockisd.org/page/gun-safetyfirearm safety webpage to provide additional resources and information to families.

The program is part of an ongoing effort to promote responsible firearm storage and enhance student and community safety.
